From 1943 to 1947, Yankton was homeported at Philiadephia PA and then transferred to Portland ME for assignment. She was used for icebreaking, law enforcement and search and rescue operations.

27 November 1966 she towed the disabled FV Plymouth from 12 miles S of Grand Mannan I to Boston Ma. 30 December 1969 - 1 January 1970 she relieved a commercial tug towing a blazing tanker, the Dean Reiaur, from Portland, towing her seaward while fighting the fire. Decommissioned 28 September 1984
