Launched 24 June 3 1939
Commissioned 6 July 1939

First stationed at Boston MA and assigned to CINCLANT during the war years and operated in Greenland waters. Transferred to New York NY in 1945 till 1947 and then moved to Portland ME for about a year then to New Bedford MA to 1952. Moved to the Great Lakes that year and assigned at Chicago IL\, her last years from 1980 were spent ported at Buffalo NY . Used for ice breaking, law enforcement and search and rescue.

August 1965 assisted in search for debris from UAL flight crash in Lake Michigan . February 1969 helped free the grounded tug Silver Star and then escorted to Holland MI. April 1970 Aided in freeing the grounded MV Stadacona near the Mackinaw Bridge - Decommissioned 1982

 

Near disaster, the Arundel undergoes an unscheduled dry docking
