Apalache was stationed at Baltimore MD from 1943 until September 1984 when she was transferred to Portland ME. Her primary duties were icebreaking, law enforcement and search and rescue. On 11-12 June 1965 she assisted fighting a fire aboard the MV Ciudad de Nieva near Baltimore. 13 February 1968 assisted fighting a fire on Pier 5 Baltimore.  4 June 1969 assisted fighting fire on MV Provence Town at Baltimore
